Statement on the 2024 Election

Last night's results were not what we wished for or expected; we are gutted. Donald Trump's re-election opens the door to many worrying images of this country’s direction and future; however, we will try to have hope in the American promise and the vision we have for the future. One thing, however, was made crystal clear from today’s results: our message has failed to resonate with many of the people we fight to represent. Democrats are always at the forefront of advocating to raise wages, attack corporate greed, criminalize price gouging, lower healthcare costs, support unions, and revitalize American manufacturing. We consistently champion balancing the disproportion in the education system, the representation of marginalized groups, and the cause of personal freedom, autonomy, and choice. We represent America, regardless of our loss. We have a lot of work ahead of us; we have a lot of things to correct and learn from, but we also have a lot to hold onto and a lot to keep faith in. Don’t give up—we are nowhere near finished.

If you are anything like us, since you were old enough to understand politics, it has been a divisive and discouraging environment. An environment where change is slow, frustration is high, and injustice is the norm. It can be hard for people to find their place in the noise. Many question whether their voices, their votes, or their vision for the future truly make a difference. But we are here to remind you that your power is real. As Congresswoman AOC says, “The cynics will tell you that one vote doesn’t change anything, but what they don’t tell you is that nothing can change without a vote.” As college students, we are the future—the future healthcare workers, educators, lawyers, engineers, and innovators. Soon, we will inherit all of the partisan political problems left by previous generations. That is why the time for action is now. Now is the time to advocate for solutions that will benefit us, to campaign for leaders who will fight on our behalf, and to believe in freedom, reason, and building a better life. We are proud to have the opportunity to lead UMass Lowell’s fastest-growing political organization. This year, our priority is to create pathways for our fellow students to find their place as leaders of our community, our state, and beyond.

Signed,

Sabine de Laurent & Collin Gallagher
